Domestic Violence & Protective Orders Attorneys in Columbia Annapolis Maryland

Representing Victims and the Accused in Maryland

Protection or restraining orders provide a way for people to be safe from abuse in their own home. Unfortunately, some people seek protection orders as a way to gain leverage in a child custody matter or to remove a spouse from a shared home.

At the Law Offices of Corrie A. Boulay, our lawyers represent victims of domestic violence who need protection orders. However, we also represent people who are falsely accused of domestic violence by a spouse seeking to get the upper hand in a future divorce or custody matter.

Obtaining a Protection Order in Maryland

If you are a victim of domestic violence, you can get a temporary protection order based on your testimony alone. The temporary protection order is good for one week.

After one week, the victim and the respondent will both go back to court. Both parties should consider representation by an attorney, however either party can represent themselves pro se. The judge will then decide whether or not to continue the protection order for one year.

If the court continues the protection order, the abuser will have to vacate the shared home for at least one year. In addition, the abuser cannot contact the victim without a consent agreement. Domestic violence matters are very difficult and emotional time for everyone involved. It is important to seek out knowledgeable counsel to protect yourself and your family.
